June/July 2004 - update

Those of you who were able to attend the recent "City of Roses Quilting Party" will agree that it was a smashing success.  Jinny Beyer led the teaching and, as always, she was informative, interesting, and just a joy!  Below, you'll find a few pictures from the Quilting Party.  (Also, be sure to check the updated Customer Clips page - we captured Marje and Janice together and motionless long enough to snap their picture!)

There were about 80 people, (from as far away as Louisiana!), who made time in their busy schedules to share in our 'Quilting Party', filling most all the workshops to capacity, or over-capacity!  Jinny graciously hosted an informal question and answer session after the closing dinner.  I scribbled down a few 'nuggets of wisdom' as she was speaking to share with those of you who weren't able to be there.

carpet2_nav.cmpJinny personally prefers John James size 11 quilting needles for hand piecing.

carpet2_nav.cmpConso cotton thread is her favorite for piecing.

carpet2_nav.cmpYLI 100 % cotton thread is her preference for quilting.

carpet2_nav.cmpLow loft Dream Cotton batting by Acme Pad Co is the batting she uses.

carpet2_nav.cmpFor choosing a thimble Jinny prefers to try it on for "feel".  It has to feel right.

On the plane to Portland Jinny stuffed a fabric "ball" she had made using beautifully shaded fabric hexagons.  She planned to work on another while flying home.  In the Fall she will have a book detailing how to make these colorful "balls" and we will have the books in stock when they are published.  They are really neat!!

In my own opinion, the 'Pleasing Proportions' workshop based on the Golden Mean and the Fibonacci numbers was most interesting and informative.  I have been making my patchwork and border decisions based on what is pleasing to my eye.  I have lots to learn about proportion just in case my eye is not seeing things in proportion.

April/May 2004 - newsletter

If you like a Spring that is warm and sunny, and I do, hasn’t it been a glorious one?!  All the flowers have put on such a wonderful early color show for us.  The color combinations that work in nature will work in our quilts as well.  Try a new combination in your next quilt borrowing the color bursts nature has provided us this Spring.

Jinny Beyer’s Monticello collection continues to be popular (as seen in the latest McCall’s Quilting magazine) as well as her Somerset collection.  Her latest group is Tuscan Sun which is equally as beautiful.  I have a sample cut out.  Hopefully it will soon be a quilt top, then a finished product!

It has been a busy 2004 for me so far.  January always starts off with a bang doing the necessary Shop inventory and the Winter newsletter.  The Sewing & Stitchery Expo’ in Puyallup, WA followed and it was another great show.  March brought our Leprechaun Leap (a.k.a. Shop Hop) which was a fun event.  In April the tax man cometh (for all of us) and I had to get my accounting book caught up in a hurry.  April also brought the wonderful Clark County Quilt Show.  There were so many great quilts it was a real challenge to pick a favorite.  I always enjoy being a vendor at that show.  May brought the Spring newsletter to write and mail.  And, of course, preparing for the 2004 City of Roses Quilting Party took a fair amount of time!

As if this isn’t enough extra curricular Shop activity, I've been working with my youngest son, Mark, in putting together this web site.  I hope that you find it enjoyable, informative, and efficient.  If you are going to try the Online Store, you may want to read through the "Before You Shop!" page first - (especially if you are new to online shopping - like me).  P
lease use our Contact Us page and tell me honestly what you think.  All suggestions are welcome.  We appreciate your input.

On that same note, any helpful hits, current projects, important resources etc., that you would like to share with our fellow quilters, please e-mail me.  We hope to flesh out the Customer Clips page with lots of interesting stories featuring Scarborough Flair customers and associates.  Please read this month's feature on Marje Rhine and her mother, Janice Matsen.

If you share your e-mail address with us we can e-mail the next newsletter to you!  Just click on the Register Now page.  That will generate an e-mail directly to my 'inbox' & I'll add you to our list.  There is also a place to input contact information within the Online Store.  Either way, we'll be sure to include you in future 'e-mailings'.  Also, remember to check back often as we'll be updating and adding new products, links, hints, patterns, & more.

As many of you know, Mark recently moved back to Oregon from New York.  He and his family lived in a Class A motorhome for several months while they crossed the country, (the long way, via Niagara Falls, Miami, the Grand Canyon, etc.)  They finally settled in Yamhill county this Spring.  If anyone is thinking of 'hitting the road', he has put his motorhome up for sale.  With all the luxury upgrades, it is more like having a personal moving Hilton than camping!  You can check out all the details at www.bounder4sale.com.

Speaking of vacationing, we will be closed May 30 and 31 to enjoy the  Memorial Day Holiday as well as July 3, 4, 5  Independence Day week-end.  Then, signaling the end of Summer we will be closed September 4, 5 and 6th for the Labor Day holiday week-end. Please mark your calendar.

JAPANESE CHICKEN
Marinade: 1/4 c. sugar; 1/4 c. wine; ½ c. soy sauce. Put into gallon size sealable plastic bag.

Cut boneless chicken breasts into 1" strips. Marinade strips for a few hours or overnight in the refrigerator. Turn bag several times. Put pieces on skewers and bake on cake rack (makeshift broiler pan) about 15 minutes each side at 350 degrees. Put under broiler 2-3 minutes to brown.

You can use chicken wings as well. You don’t need to skewer them. Mmm. Long time Japanese American friends made this recipe for Bridge break treats. I have made them many times and taken them to potluck affairs especially in the summer.

I hope you will try this recipe. I know you will like it!

Please note: Effective June 1st there will be a fifty cent charge on all debit card transactions.

As you read the class descriptions this newsletter you will notice that some of the classes are “Two for” classes.  “Two for” classes are a real bargain - two people get to take the class for the price of one person.  This offer may never be repeated so take advantage of it this summer session.
