Fall/Winter 2005 Newsletter

Class Schedule      Harvest Hop     Show & Tell      Recipe      TinaTips      Dates to Note

It was a great summer for sewing out on the patio as I had hoped to do, but... I never did find the time to set up my sewing machine and sew. Though it has been sunny and it still seems like summer there is a nip in the air reminding us that fall is has arrived - better weather for patchwork/quilting. Have you a project or two ready to make?

Jinny Beyer's newest quilt kit Around the World with Jinny Beyer has arrived. You can click here to view it: Around the World with Jinny Beyer. I have started making it and I can assure you it will be another show stopper. Also, Jinny's 2005 Palette update fabrics are here.

On October 12th - 15th we will be participating in the Harvest Shop Hop. Six shops are part of this Shop Hop. Click here for details. I am currently working on my version of the quilt using the basket patterns you will get at each shop. Stop by and take a peek.

October 19th Show & Tell is scheduled to be held at Parkrose High School, same room as in the past. I hope you will plan to come and show something you have made. Or, come to see what others have made and help out Snow-Cap at the same time. Click here for details. Marje and Janice have made another opportunity quilt for Show & Tell - $1.00 donation for an opportunity.

I have made an executive decision. Some things are easier to get into than to get out of. In 1979 when I opened Scarborough Flair it was an exciting time, it was "easy to get into", to open the shop. It is now 26 ½ years later and the time has come to, "get out of", to close. It is very difficult for me to even think of closing Scarborough Flair but the time has come. November 23rd will be the last day I will be open for business. In the meantime I will carry on with the Shop Hop, Show & Tell and a few classes, and, yes gals, another Quilt 'til You Wilt Evening!

I would like to "kick off" my Retirement Sale liquidation on October 8th with a little retirement party, cake and a beverage, while you choose any and all bolts of fabric with 5 yards or less on the bolt (except for the Palette) for 40% off the marked price!! Other fabrics will be 20% off that day.

Sale schedule:
Oct 8 - 5 yds or less on bolt at 40% off except Palette.
All other fabrics at 20% off
Oct. 10 - 15 all fabrics will be 25 % off
Oct. 17 - 22 all fabrics and notions will be 30% off
Oct. 24 - 29 all fabrics and books will be 35 % off
Oct. 31 - Nov. 5 all fabrics will be 40% off
Nov 7 - Nov. 12 all fabrics will be 45% off
Nov 14 - 19 everything remaining will be 50% off
Nov 20 - 23 everything remaining will be 60% off

Mail or website orders are welcome. Orders will receive the discount in effect when the order arrives. Orders are plus shipping.

Of course you will want to shop early on in the sale for the best selection. Toward the end of the sale I may have some props, racks, fixtures, etc. for sale. Just ask.

Well, I did it. I have been procrastinating for a week because I could not mentally "get with it" because I have such mixed emotions about closing. I will retain my website however. You can check out what is happening and what I am doing on the website.

I would love to have you make a memory block for me, so I will remember you forever in print. Please follow the directions so the blocks will fit together in one quilt. Cut 2 matching print rectangles 2" x 5" and 1 muslin rectangle 2" x 5". Write your name and city, and any other pearly words of wisdom for me, within the muslin block. Sandwich the muslin between the print rectangles and you should have an unfinished 5" block..

During the Retirement Sale for each $10.00
you spend you will get a ticket for an
opportunity to win a Singer Featherweight
sewing machine. You could be the winner!
Drawing held 4 p.m. Nov 23rd

 Winter Recipe

Mona shared these pickles with me this summer. They were so good I asked her if she would share her recipe with you.

Here it is.

Cucumber Namasu (Japanese Pickles)

2 medium cucumbers or 1 English cucumber
1 stalk celery
1 small carrot
1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds (optional)
salt

Sauce:
1/2 cup vinegar
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. salt

Into a large bowl:
1. Slice cucumbers, carrot and celery diagonally - very thin.
2. Salt and let stand for at least ½ hour. (This will release water and wilt vegetables.)
3. Squeeze vegetables and rinse if too salty to taste. (I put soaked vegetables into a colander and let it drain, then rinse with cold water while tossing it gently by hand.)

Sauce: Prepare while vegetables are "wilting" (step 2 above). Mix vinegar, sugar and salt in small sauce pan and heat over medium heat to dissolve. Pour cooled sauce over drained vegetables, add sesame seeds if desired. Mix and refrigerate. This keeps well for over a week in the refrigerator. Yummy!

TinaTips:

An old sock (without holes!) filled with a fistful or two of beach sand and knotted closed will make an impromptu pin cushion. If you're working on a large project spread out on the table or floor, you can tuck the open end under your belt and it will always be handy as you move around working. Pencil shavings work as a filler, too - and the graphite helps keep your pins sharp.
