Class Schedule      Harvest Hop      Recipe      Show & Tell      Holiday Closing Dates

It seems like autumn weather is coming early this year with the cooler days we have had recently.  Wasn’t it a grand summer, though, if you like very warm, (sometimes down right hot), weather?  I hope you enjoyed your summer.  Did you manage to fit in a bit of piecing and quilting?  I did get a few samples made, among them are two versions of a table runner.  You can see them in the Online Store offered as “Ready to Sew" kits.  Just open the kit and start sewing!  The pieces are cut to size ready for you to pick up and sew.  We also have them in the Shop.

Jinny Beyer’s newest collection 'Sanibel' arrived recently.  This is a miniature grouping in the sweetest pastel colors for you who like to do miniatures.  You can download her pattern for this collection from our Featured Pattern page, which will link you to RJRfabrics, or you can see it at the Shop.  I will be making up kits and plan to have them available in the Online Store as well as in the Shop.  Soon to arrive is Ravello, another Jinny Beyer collection.  In this grouping there are great tapestry-type florals and paisleys, (both will work great for Stack ‘n Whack quilts), tone on tones and her mirror image borders.  There will be kits available using this collection also.

New arrivals from other designers are wonderful, too.  We are steadily adding new products and fabric collections to the Online Store, and remember, if you don't see what you're looking for, you can call or e-mail to request an item.  Of course, you're always welcome to come in the Shop to say 'hi' and check them out, too.  One I especially like is a beautiful snowflake pattern.  Another is a blue poinsettia fabric.  In fact I used it in one of the table runners. We now have a nice flesh color solid for doll-making.  A new Halloween stripe is great for placemats.  See our made up sample.

Have you seen the new Marking Magic aerosol spray to mark quilting designs on quilts?  You lay the stencil in place and spray using smooth back and forth motions on the stencil.  The design appears in white on the quilt.  It stays until you wash it away.  Come test it out.  A bit of practice may be necessary but you can mark the quilt in a much shorter time.

On October 14 thru 17 we will be participating in a shop hop, the HARVEST HOP.  Pick up a harvest theme pattern at each participating shop as well as an autumn leaf.  When you have collected leaves from all five shops you are eligible to win some nice prizes.  See below for details.

The City of Roses Quilting Party was a smashing success.  As always it was a delight to have Jinny Beyer back to teach workshops. There are pictures from this event on the S/S 04 Newsletter page, (link at top).  One participant left her jacket behind.  Though I have notified all participants, the owner of the jacket has not come forward to claim it.  Cooler, rainy weather is here.  You will need your jacket!

On November 26th, the day after Thanksgiving, we will open at noon.  You will all be shopping the Mall sales in the morning so we will open a bit later.  We will be closed December 24, 25, 26 for Christmas and December 31, January 1, 2 to welcome in the New Year.  Does it seem possible we are talking about 2005??  Where did 2004 go?

Chunky Pear Sauce
to freeze for winter

5 quart pan with cover and a scale. Weigh pan empty. Pare, core and cut pears in 1/8ths. If pears are real large cut into 1/16ths. Weigh pan full of cut up pears. For about 7 ½ -8 pounds of pears add 1/3 cup of water. Start cooking on high briefly to start releasing juice from pears. Don’t let pears burn. Lower heat and cook about 45 minutes until soft. Stir a few times to bring the more cooked pears to the top. To the cooked pears add 1/3 cup of sugar and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (or to taste). Mash with a hand potato masher. Cool. Put into containers and freeze. Yum, Makes about 2 ½ quarts.

The whole family, from Grandpa to little grandson Nathaniel, love this chunky pear sauce during the winter months. This summer our pear tree had a bumper crop so I spent more time than I want to remember making pear sauce. There are about 80 containers in the freezer. We will all enjoy it thru the winter. It may be too late for you to make it this year but you will want to keep the recipe for next season. Our tree is a Bartlett pear but I would guess any variety of pear would work as well. I haven’t tried other varieties of fruit but peaches and apples would probably work too.

Tip:
Use 'Gloves in a Bottle' before handling polyester batting.  Your hands won't snag in the batting.
